The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia today re-estimated the number of the population of Banteng, according to WCS’ social media post.
WCS Cambodia has recently included a global population estimate for Banteng of around 4,000 individuals in a Facebook post, based on data from the IUCN Red List assessment for this species.
WCS Cambodia stated that in its original post, it was not clear that this number was a global estimate, then it was reported by some news outlets as a Cambodian national estimate.
“No official national estimate is available for Banteng, but based on recent monitoring data from several sites and organisations, it is likely that the total Cambodian population is currently less than 1,500,” it added.
Although the population of Banteng in Cambodia has declined significantly since 2010, the Cambodian Banteng population is still one of the most important wild populations anywhere in the world.
