A baby has been left permanently blind after a surgeon removed the toddler’s wrong eye in a botched operation.
The baby underwent the botched surgery after being treated for a tumour in his left eye.
But when doctor Armando Cisneros Espinoza removed the eye, it was later found to be the one-year-old’s full working right eye.
Baby Fernando’s parents are now suing the hospital for medical negligence after they believe doctors initially lied to them.
Distressed mum Maria said: “The doctor told us that he had removed the right eye because he had seen a tumour in that eye as well.
“But we cannot believe a tumour is going to suddenly appear in just a few hours in our son’s good eye, and the left eye, that was supposed to be removed, is still there.
“The doctor said that he wanted to save his life and therefore he decided to remove the right eye.”
Medical staff have said they will prove to Fernando’s parents that the right eye did need to be removed.
But Maria has said she would like to get an independent test done.
She said: “I feel impotence and anger because my baby does not have a working eye anymore, and nobody can put it back, it was his only healthy eye.”
The Mexican Social Security Institute said they have opened an investigation into the incident at the specialist Mexican Social Security Institute in Ciudad Obregon, Mexico.
Lawyers said Fernando’s life is still in danger with the child still needing an operation to remove the tumour on his bad eye.
His parents are said to be torn about letting Fernando have further surgery after losing faith in the system.
