EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y., April 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Last Sunday, one of Long Island’s longest tenured ministers serving at the same Christian church, Rev. Lester Ayars, has stepped down, taking the new title of Pastor Emeritus. A new senior pastor, Rev. Michael O’Connor, was installed at the church’s annual dinner Sunday evening. According to Ayars, “As I took the pulpit back in January 1968, my wife, Diane and I knew we would be in for a wonderful journey—we didn’t realize that journey would be 47 years!” Under his pastorate, church growth made it necessary for two major expansions, including adding 15,000 sq ft of classrooms, a new information center and additional offices. Island Christian Church, formerly known as changed its name four years ago from Northport Baptist Church in order to be better suited as a multi-campus church. In 2010, Island Christian opened its Holbrook campus which just moved into a new facility at 10 Peachtree Court. Less than one year later, Island Christian Church Port Jefferson was launched, located on East Main Street in the heart of the historic Village of Port Jefferson.
When asked about what’s next for his ministry, Pastor Ayars said, “Investing in people and seeing lives change is always exciting. As pastor emeritus, I will have the opportunity to do just that, through mentoring, some teaching and speaking. I am excited about the ongoing opportunity to serve our Lord in this new role.” Pastor O’Connor is certainly no stranger to ICC, having served on staff as senior associate pastor for over 30 years. As senior pastor, Pastor Mike, as he is fondly called— will press forward with the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, the specific message this Easter is “Christ in You the Hope of Glory” (Colossians 1:27). As Pastor Mike says, “The message of the resurrection never grows old, because Jesus, alive and triumphant, is making all things new.”
ICC will hold its Good Friday service at 7 pm. Easter Sunday services are at 9 and 11 am. The community at Island Christian Church is pursuing the kind of church life set forth in Scripture. The foundations of this church are uplifting music, relevant teaching, authentic relationships, heart-felt prayer and compassionate provision for the needy. We invite our neighbors to join us as we strive to demonstrate a compelling faith that will touch the lives of individuals within our larger communities. Come and see what God has done.
