The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the U.S. have highly valued the progress and achievements of their strategic partnership.
The information was shared by H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister, after the 9th ASEAN-U.S. Summit held tonight via videoconference.
Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia along with other ASEAN Heads of State/Government and U.S. President H.E. Joe Biden attended the summit chaired by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei.
In the summit, the ASEAN leaders lauded the U.S.’ support for ASEAN Community Building, integration, fight against COVID-19, and economic development, especially the increase in trade exchange and investment.
U.S. President H.E. Joe Biden spoke highly of the strong relations with ASEAN and expressed the U.S’ commitment to continue its cooperation with ASEAN in various domain.
He further announced to provide US$102 million more for the cooperation with ASEAN, adding that the U.S. will support ASEAN’s core role in the region, particularly in the Indo-Pacific framework.
The U.S. will open a U.S.-CDC’s office in Hanoi, Vietnam to contribute to preventing transmitted diseases, and hoped that ASEAN will join hands with the U.S. in combating climate change.
ASEAN and the U.S. pledged to promote their cooperation on digital and non-traditional security and to ensure peace, stability and security in the region. They also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar and the South China Sea issue.
ASEAN and the U.S. will mark the 45th anniversary of their dialogue relations next year.
