The Law on amendment to the Law on Political Parties that will provide opportunity for politicians restricted from their political activities by the court to possibly resume the career has been promulgated by a Royal Kram signed earlier this month by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni.
The amendment to Article 45 of the Law on Political Parties was seen as an effort of the Royal Government of Cambodia to further expand the country’s democratic space.
As explained by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in his earlier address, the law will not allow the restricted politicians to automatically regain their political rights.
To legally resume the political career, they have to file proper request for the review and endorsement of the Ministry of Interior for Prime Minister’s approval, he added.
This is the third amendment of the law introduced since 1997, and the first and second amendments happened in March and July 2017, respectively.
