Lt. Gen. Sar Savy, a Cambodian peacekeepers being in a mission under the UN umbrella in the Republic of Mali, passed away yesterday due to COVID-19, according to Gen. Chhum Socheat, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of National Defence.
This is a big loss of the Cambodian blue helmet resource for the UN peacekeeping operations, he underlined.
There is no official information about the time when Lt. Gen. Sar Savy’s body will be returned home.
Lt. Gen. Sar Savy and his EOD team left for Mali in April 2019 for a one-year mission. He ended his mission last month, but his return was delayed due to COVID-19.
At least two Cambodian nationals in foreign countries have so far lost their life due to COVID-19 – the mother of Oknha Song Saran, President of Cambodia Rice Federation, living in the U.S., and Lt. Gen. Sar Savy.
For COVID-19 situation in Cambodia, the total confirmed cases rose to 125, including 54 Cambodians, 40 French, 13 Malaysians, 5 British, 3 Chinese, 3 Vietnamese, 2 Americans, 2 Indonesians, 2 Canadians, and one Belgian, after a new positive case was reported this morning. Of them, 123 have been cured successfully.
