Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) today classified a village in Prek Norin commune, Ek Phnom district, Battambang province as a bird flu outbreak zone, a move to stop the spread of the disease.
The decision was made in a Prakas issued on Jan. 12 after more than a thousand of chicken in Prek Tachreng village of Prek Norin commune have been found dead with the so-called avian influenza (H5N1) detection.
According to the Prakas, all kinds to birds in the outbreak zone must be destroyed while the farming, purchase, sale and transport of birds in, out or across the affected area must be temporarily postponed until further notice.
The ministry also sets up a working group to investigate the source of the outbreak within 30 days.
H5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds called avian influenza (or “bird flu”). Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza occur occasionally, but it is difficult to transmit the infection from person to person.
