The 2nd National Games began yesterday evening under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and his spouse Samdech Kittiprittbandit Bun Rany Hun Sen.
Held at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh from May 25 to June 4, 2018 under the theme Sports Bring Peace and Development, this annual sports event attracted in total 4,163 athletes of 27 sports from across the country to compete in 274 games.
The 2nd National Games officially started after His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, lighted the torch which was relayed by outstanding athletes from the Royal Palace to Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen at the National Olympic Stadium.
Cambodia has been preparing to host the 32nd SEA Games in 2023. This regional competition is scheduled to take place in Phnom Penh capital city and in some provinces including Kampot, Kep, Takeo, Siem Reap, Battambang and Kampong Cham from Dec. 1 to 15, 2023. The two-week-long event is expected to attract about 10,000 delegates, of them 7,000 are athletes.
The draft master plan toward hosting the 32nd SEA Games has already been approved by the Cambodian cabinet meeting.
The Kingdom is committed to win at least 30 percent or one third of the total gold medals of 300 at this regional sports event.
