At least 123 members of 52 criminal gangs involved in heinous crimes including dacoity, robbery, and murder were arrested during the month of July, Lahore SSP (Investigations) Rana Ayaz Saleem said on Wednesday.
The police also recovered looted items worth Rs12.6 million besides a large number of illegal weapons from their possession. The SSP told reporters at his office that out of total 123 accused, at least 60 are hardened criminals, having history of crimes.
The criminal gangs were identified as Tayab alias Mota gang, Mahtab alias Tabi gang, Noman alias Ganja gang, Qasim alias Changar gang, Saddi gang, Abu Bakar alias Mota gang, Altaf alias Tafa gang, Farman alias Bodi gang, Hashim gang, Akram alias Alu gang, Tanveer alias Tillu gang and others. These criminals formed gangs in jails and started criminal activities after being released from the prisons. They have confessed to more than 306 incidents of crimes of heinous nature during preliminary probe. The police seized stolen and looted items including illegal weapons cash, cars, motorcycles, auto rickshaws, mobile phones, laptops, and gold ornaments from their possession.
SSP Saleem said the police are active against criminal elements in the city. Special crackdown against the criminals is underway under National Action Plan, he informed.
All the investigation in-charges have been given instructions to break the network of dacoits and thief gangs especially those involved in car and motorcycle thefts. Special teams of anti-car lifting staff are keeping a watchful eye on entry and exit points of the city, the SSP added.-Staff Reporter
