The Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) organised on Sept. 4 a Dissemination Workshop of Self-Supporting Rural Development Project with Saemaul Undong's Participatory Approach.
The event took place at KOICA's recently-inaugurated Cambodia-Korea Rural Development Centre under the presidency of Minister of Rural Development H.E. Ouk Rabun, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cambodia H.E. Kim Weonjin, and Director of KOICA Cambodia office, Mr. Jeong Yun Gil.
According to a news release of KOICA, this workshop aims to introduce the new operational guideline to implement grassroots project of the year 2017-2018 and to share successful story from the excellent performance model village. In addition, this workshop is also to give Reward of Recognition to the outstanding villages for their best effort to implement village development project during 2016-2017.
The Self-Supporting Rural Development Project is a five-year project and is implemented under US$8.95 million grant aids from the Republic of Korea.
On the occasion, H.E. Ouk Rabun mentioned that this project is very important for village development in Cambodia because this is a project that help improving ownership of villagers and empower good cooperation at grassroots level.
For his part, H.E. Kim Weonjin said, During the 1st and 2nd year that pilot project has been being implemented in model villages, we can see that the capacity of Village Development Committee (VDC) and government officer has been improved and agriculture productivity as well as the income of villager are also increased.
Since 2015, 30 models villages have implemented more than 600 pilot projects and more than 300 projects is being planned to implement for year of 2017-2018. As a result, villagers can develop their community via demand driven and the whole community has better situation on food security due to the increasing of livestock and rice bank while the new community physical infrastructure are being popped up.
