MANILA, Philippines – Three suspected New People’s Army guerrillas and an Army trooper were killed in separate attacks by the NPA in the Bicol region yesterday.
The Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command said the attacks occurred in Sorsogon and Masbate.
Col. Cesar Idio, chief of the Army’s 903rd Brigade, said a group of soldiers were holding dialogues with villagers in Barangay Bacolod in Irosin, Sorsogon when a band of rebels opened fire at them.
The troopers retaliated, killing three guerrillas belonging to the NPA’s special partisan unit.
Meanwhile, an Army trooper was shot dead by three rebels in San Jacinto, Masbate.
Security officials withheld the identity of the slain soldier until after his family is notified.

Idio said the soldier was on his way to send money to his family when he was shot in Barangay Bagacay.
